ZEST Awards announces nominees for Outstanding Youth Led Project in Greater Western Sydney – Campbelltown’s Fisher’s Gig is nominated for their annual youth music festival.

Fisher’s Gig has been part of the long standing Festival of Fisher’s Ghost celebrations for 18 years, starting as a band competition the event has grown to be an award winning event for Campbelltown and the Western Sydney region – attracting big name local artist such as last year’s headliners The Beards.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker commends Fisher’s Gig on their nomination and recognises the positive contribution young people make to the Campbelltown community.

“Our youth groups who worked hard to bring this large – scale community event to fruition can be proud that their commitment has been acknowledged in such a way” said Cr Hawker.

“The nomination also helps to highlight the role of Fisher’s Gig as more than just a youth music event. The involvement of young people in its coordination and delivery has seen the event provide professional development opportunities, highlight local musical and event coordination talent, and act as a catalyst for promoting sustainability initiatives.”

The ZEST Awards is an event led by peak body Western Sydney Community Forum and showcases the achievements of the community sector. This year ZEST Awards 2016’s key partners include TRI Community Exchange Inc., WESTIR Ltd., Western Sydney University, TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute and Transport for NSW.

“The ZEST Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the successes of local young people, and we’re delighted to share in their excitement. We also look forward to learning more about the other great projects being undertaken across the region at the upcoming awards night” said Cr Hawker.

Winners will be announced at the 2016 ZEST Awards on Wednesday, 24 February at ANZ Stadium.

Some positive signs in the budget, but more needs to be done to address inequity in Western Sydney

Since the budget announcement on Tuesday night, I have been reflecting on what all this means for the community and human services industry, and more importantly for the people of Western Sydney that we support. On budget night, I saw a shift in the national narrative with the Government’s approach to people experiencing vulnerabilities. I saw a shift in how income support and rental assistance was viewed, that it is a security safety net for times when people are in need and at times of crisis.

One Small Step Towards Reconciliation

Western Sydney Community Forum welcomes a recent Mayoral Minute adopted by Council as a measure towards reconciliation for communities in Western Sydney. Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne of The Hills Shire Council made a significant motion regarding reconciliation in the region. The Mayoral minute was unanimously endorsed by Council where an invitation will be extended to local Aboriginal Elders to meet with Council, and an Acknowledgement to Country will be included in Citizenship Ceremonies and at major community events.

Construction and cranes only get us so far – Equity and the State Budget

The NSW Government released its much-anticipated Budget this week. I was excited. We had the recent signing of the Western Sydney City Deal. We saw a strong public discourse of governing ‘with heart’. And we have an election(s) looming. I was excited and keen to hear how this would all play out in reality, to get to the heart of priorities across Western Sydney and beyond, in NSW. What I found is that this Budget, in the main, begins to address some of the infrastructure priorities of the region but has some considerable way to go before it gets close to being a Budget that will foster, sustain and improve community wellbeing and liveability.
